The job of a dispatcher is to dispatch equipment and vehicles for various purposes. A typical example of an emergency dispatcher is a 911 dispatcher taking emergency calls and sending out emergency personnel to a home address or to the scene of an accident. When you work dispatching emergency vehicles, you will have to keep careful records of each call, including the recording of the call. This usually takes the form or entering the details of the call into the computer system, which will include the time and date, the specific report and the type of emergency vehicle and personnel dispatched to the scene.

When handling calls as an emergency dispatcher, you do have to pay attention to detail and get all the pertinent information. Then you have to know who is the best emergency service to handle the emergency, whether it is the police, ambulance services or the fire department. In this way you screen the calls. You will need to be knowledgeable about medical emergencies as there have been cases where people working at this job have had to provide instructions to someone delivering a baby.

The work environment of an emergency dispatcher can be a very hectic one. You should be able to remain calm in an emergency and handle all cases with ease.
