Executive Assistant to CEO

Company name
Blavity, Inc.

Los Angeles, CA, United States

We're looking for new members to join our team!

Blavity, Inc. is a venture-funded technology and new media company, and have assembled an amazing team of passionate, high-energy, focused rock-stars who cultivate our community and advance our strategic direction. We are looking for new people to help us continue to grow.

Blavity is changing the landscape of media representation by building the world’s largest digital community for Millennials of Color. Blavity was founded in 2014 around a simple idea: Enable Millennials of Color to tell their own stories. Today, we average 2 Million monthly unique visitors, generate 8 Million monthly social impressions, and distribute our message across all major social media platforms.

I used to think an executive assistant was too much for a startup CEO, but as I’ve progressed in the lifecycle of our company and discovered a very different reality: you help make sure the train runs on time.

Blavity is seeking an Executive Assistant to support the CEO.  As an Executive Assistant at Blavity, you will support the CEO in all administrative needs, be a point of contact and help troubleshoot issues that may come up. You should be excited about efficiency, operations and helping Blavity run smoothly.

This is a full-time role is based in Downtown Los Angeles and will require some travel.

How the Role Works
I need someone to partner with, who can be fully trusted with managing my calendar, my email, my phone, my contacts, as well as coordinating aspects of both my professional and my personal life. You will work a lot of hours and carry a lot of my tasks as your own; we will interact in some of my most exciting high and stressful low moments. You will also interact quite a bit with my co-founders Jeff and Aaron. A good person for this role would be someone who likes challenges, never doing the same task over again, and is calm.

I need you in the office when I’m in the office, relieving me of administrative work so that I can focus on responsibilities that come with leading the company. Together, we will navigate a time of incredible growth for our startup and things move very fast. It’s going to be a rollercoaster ride.

Some of the Things You’ll Do
I am doing many new things now that I wasn’t doing a year ago, so I imagine your role might evolve as well. Here are some things I know I would like to entrust you with managing right away:

  • You will be the gatekeeper for all things Blavity, including 21Ninety, Shadow and Act, Afro.Tech and Travel Noire
  • Manage all administrative aspects for CEO, driving a list of key decisions I need to make each day, such as: documents to review and sign, prioritizing important mail and emails, invitations, deadlines, reminders, etc, screening calls; coordinating and managing the CEO’s calendar, including travel and meeting arrangements
  • Understand the business, policies and procedures and support Blavity’s mission and values
  • Help build employee and client relations by effectively upholding the values and priorities of the CEO and executives
  • Supporting other department efforts under special assignment; facilitating communications between the CEO and other members of the organization.
  • Manage expenses and coordinate with other operating team members to keep a pulse on the business
  • Creatively think of ways to save time and work more efficiently
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Day-to-day, I’m straightforward and I give direct feedback. I’m mostly interested in tasks and updates directly connected to the goals of the company. I will be pretty open with you about things I think are worth our attention, and things that aren’t, so we have to be picky about where we spend our time.

The Long Term
if you’re not my EA forever that’s totally fine, but I want someone who will be committed for at least a year. Beyond that, being my EA is a great place to learn every aspect of the company, get connected in the industry and get trained to work at the next role in your career.

Together, we will continue building an amazing startup and if you want to learn what it’s like to run a company then I invite you to come run Blavity with me.

Compensation commensurate with experience.
