As part of the largest college at the University of Michigan, LSA Finance employs more than 80 employees who provide financial and research administration support to over 100 units. We are seeking an experienced professional to serve as the Business Office Manager for East Hall Business office. This position will provide oversight, leadership and be the content expert of financial and research administration operations for the faculty in Psychology and Math units. This will include support in pre- and post-award activities, financial activities, financial transaction processing, and research reporting. This individual will work directly with the Senior Manager for Research Administration. The Business Office Manager must have excellent interpersonal skills to be able to partner with colleagues at all levels and within multiple university offices. This position requires strategic-thinking and a proactive individual who will approach the work with a customer service orientation.

Oversee pre- and post-award process and provide support to faculty in pre- and post-award activities. Meet with faculty and administrators to discuss proposal preparation. Assign work to support staff, ensuring that they are following established procedures as they review budgets for accuracy and compliance with sponsor guidelines, prepare PAF's and obtain necessary signatures, submit proposals through appropriate channel (Fastlane,,etc.), and perform post-award management activities.

Oversee financial activities for Psychology and Math faculty, coordinating with LSA Business Analysts as appropriate; including processing financial transactions, managing unit defined commitments, resolving billing issues, overseeing credit card payments, calculating and budget checking summer salaries, and ensuring salaries and effort are allocated appropriately.

Supervise business office staff. Work with Senior Manager for Research Administration to continue to grow research administration support for Psychology and Math faculty and create a highly functioning research office. Hire new staff, oversee performance management, and make salary increase recommendations. Determine workflow, ensure consistency in service delivery, accuracy of work, and effective procedures and communication. Provide guidance to staff in problem resolution.

Working closely with peer business office managers and under the direction of the Senior Manager of Research Administration, determine procedures and best business practices within the context of established LSA Finance procedures. Ensure that business office staff are trained and knowledgeable about processes.

Work closely with unit chief administrators and communicate about procedures or changes to processes. Oversee documentation of procedures and review of these processes for adequate controls and separation of duties. Conduct regular meetings with chief administrators and faculty to review reports and discuss research and financial issues or concerns.

Participate in LSA Finance business office managers group: attend meetings, assist with process development and special projects.

Required Qualifications*

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; minimum of five years progressively responsible experience in research administration and finance, preferably in an academic setting. Direct experience with pre- and post- award activities. Ability to develop and implement procedures, map workflow, and document processes. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Demonstrated competence in developing and refining reports, along with experience and detailed knowledge of transaction processing and general financial activities. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff at all levels and with varying levels of research administration and financial knowledge; demonstrated ability to work under pressure of deadlines and competing priorities; demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, ability to complete tasks in a timely manner; adaptive to a changing environment. Prior experience in functional or direct supervision of staff and the skills to effectively lead others and build a strong team. Ability to promote a continued positive culture amongst staff. Track record in meeting high customer service standards and ability to motivate staff to do the same.

Desired Qualifications*

Certified Research Administrator (CRA). Knowledge of various federal and non-federal sponsors.
